This is a reproduction of the 1792 “Birch Cent” designed and engraved by Birch (first name is still unknown) as a pattern for our first one cent coins. It carries an edge inscription “TO BE ESTEEMED * BE USEFUL” and contained one cent worth of copper. It’s about the size of a modern half Dollar. The size was reduced to what we now know as the “large cent” size to allow for production costs. ReplyForward
